چکیده

Usually the Stokes equations that govern a flow in a smooth thin domain (with thickness of order ε) are related to the Reynolds equation for the pressure psmooth. In this paper, we show that for a rough thin domain (with rugosities of order ε) the flow is governed by a modified Reynolds equation for a pressure prough. Moreover we find the relation prough = K psmooth where K is an explicit coefficient depending only on the form of the rugosities and on the viscosity of the fluid. In some sense, we see that the flow may be accelerated using adequate rugosity profiles on the bottom. The limit system is mathematically justified through a variant of the notion of two-scale convergence: The originality and difficulty being the anisotropy in the height profile. Rigorous Derivation of the Thin Film Approximation with Roughness-Induced Correctors

We derive the thin film approximation including roughness-induced correctors. This corresponds to the description of a confined Stokes flow whose thickness is of order ε (designed to be small) ; but we also take into account the roughness patterns of the boundary that are described at order ε, leading to a perturbation of the classical Reynolds approximation. The asymptotic expansion leading to...

Effect of Surface Roughness on Vortex Length and Efficiency of Gas-oil Cyclones through CFD Modelling

Separation of suspended droplets in a fluid flow has been a great concern for scientists and technologists. In the current study, the effect of the surface roughness on flow field and the performance of a gas-oil cyclone is studied numerically. The droplets and the turbulent airflow inside the cyclone are considered to be the discrete and continuous phases respectively. The Reynolds stress mode...

Compressibility Effects on Roughness-induced Boundary Layer Transition

Direct numerical simulation is used to investigate the effect of compressibility on roughness-induced boundary layer transition. Computations are performed in both the lowand the high-speed regime (at free-stream Mach number Me = 2) for an isolated three-dimensional element with cubic shape and for two-dimensional roughness strips. For each configuration two values of the roughness height Reyno...

Numerical Simulation of the Incompressible Laminar Flow Over a Square Cylinder

Simulation of fluid flow over a square cylinder can be performed in order to understand the physics of the flow over bluff bodies. In the current study, incompressible laminar flow over a confined square cylinder, with variable blockage factor has been simulated numerically, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The focus has been on vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of the cylinder. Vorticity...

Convergence to the Reynolds approximation with a double effect of roughness

We prove that the lubrication approximation is perturbed by a non-regular roughness of the boundary. We show how the flow may be accelerated using adequate rugosity profiles on the bottom. We explicit the possible effects of some abrupt changes in the profile. The limit system is mathematically justified through a variant of the notion of two-scale convergence. Finally, we present some numerica...
